A Problem Shared

Posted on Mon Jan 7th, 2019 @ 4:02pm by Commander Alexia Hunter-Nolan & Abigail "Abi" Hunter-Nolan PhD, MSc, BSc

Mission: Colony Support
Location: Alexia's Quarters

Arriving back at her quarters, Alexia waited for the doors to close behind her, before she slumped back against them. Ever since she’d seen Jael off, she’d been in an incredible funk. The transfer had been so quick, that she’d barely had time to process it. One moment, everything had been fine, the next – she’d been stepping aboard Dutch’s private ship, leaving both Centaurus and Alexia behind.

It was as if a sizable part of Alexia’s life had upped and walked out. Alexia had relied so much on Jael’s guidance and support that it felt as if a huge crutch had suddenly been whisked out from beneath her whilst she was using it. Perhaps that was the reasoning behind the transfer – to force Alexia to stand on her own two feet. It was possible that was Jael’s intentions – after all, she was an incredibly calculating woman.

However, Alexia suspected that the transfer had happened much faster than even Jael had expected. Given that Alexia had been under Jael’s direct care as a psychiatrist following her PTSD, it was unlikely she’d willingly abandon her so soon into her treatment. It had only been a few weeks since they’d started, and it had made a difference in Alexia’s home life. No, it seemed far more likely that Jael had been driven to leave by the unsupportive and abusive nature of the crew.

Pushing herself off the door, Alexia all but tore off her uniform jacket and pulled the undershirt off, throwing them onto the couch. She dropped her trousers and stood in the middle of the living area in just her underwear – looking out the viewport. She pondered the vast expanse, even as the stars whizzed past whilst at warp. She stood there for a few minutes, alone, in the dark room, with not much on.

The doors to the room opened behind her, spilling light from the corridor into the room, as Abi walked in. She stopped when she saw her wife just standing there in a state of semi-undress and moved in quickly to allow the doors to close. “Jeez Alex, what in gods name are you doing!?” She exclaimed as she walked over to her.

“Just thinking.” Alexia replied, in a heavy voice.

Abi walked over to Alexia and stood next to her, looking with concern. “What happened?” She asked. She knew her woman far too well, and knew the signs. They’d been working together to help her recover from the take-over experience.

“Jael left today.” Alexia said softly, almost distantly. “Transferred out.”

“Oh honey.” Abi said, and drew Alexia towards her into an embrace, putting Alexia’s head on her shoulder, and gently stroking her hair. “It’ll be okay.”

“How could she leave me?” Alexia asked, quietly, as the shock of it all came forward. The pain in her voice was apparent as it waivered.

“She didn’t leave you baby, that’s not what happened.” Abi said, comforting her as she would a child. “You know why she left, she told us. Jael didn’t abandon you – you know that.”

Alexia nodded against Abi’s shoulder but didn’t say anything, just wrapped her arms around Abi and held her tight. They stood there for a while, until Alexia moved her head up and looked into Abi’s eyes, giving her a watery smile. “Thank you.” She said, softly, and kissed Abi gently on the lips.

“That’s alright hun.” Abi smiled. “Now, lets do something about how your dressed. Whilst I have absolutely no objection to seeing you like this, someone may come looking for you.”

“I asked not to be disturbed. My new First Officer said she’d handle it.” Alexia replied. “I was going to go have a shower, but I just sort of… stopped…”

Abi smirked. “I can see that. Well, lets go have that shower then, eh? Come on, I could use one too. It’s been a very long day for the pair of us, and I could certainly do with some Alex time.”

Alexia smiled, looking at her wife with love in her eyes. “I always want Abi time.” She said, leaning in to steal another kiss.

“Come on you.” Abi said with a mock sigh, and led Alexia towards the bathroom. “I think we both need a de-stressing shower.”

Alexia just nodded and let Abi have her way.
